The most popular Trekking Peak in Nepal, the climb of 6189 m (20,285 ft) Imja Tse, more commonly known as Island Peak, is a great introduction to peak climbing in the Himalayas. The route to the glaciated summit follows a steep slope and traverses a narrow ridge. Crampons, Ice-axe and ropes are necessary for this climb. Limited climbing gear can be hired in Dingboche, or Namche Bazaar, a more extensive selection can be found in Kathmandu. From the summit of Island peak there is a spectacular panorama of the Chukhung valley and surrounding peaks of the Khumbu, including the Nupste, the south face of Lhotse, Makalu, and the graceful pointed peak of Ama Dablam. A porter is not mandatory but highly recommended to help carry your climbing gear.
Side trip via Ama Dablam Base Camp: If you are itching to get off the trekking highway to Everest Base Camp, a day detour off to the much less visited Ama Dablam Base Camp may be just what you're looking for. This off the beaten path side trip take you right up to the base of one of the Khumbu regions most beautiful mountains. Along the way, you’ll get views of Everest as you pass by yak shelters and walls constructed by Sherpa herdsmen.
October begins the most popular time to trek, with moderate temperatures, clear skies in the wake of the monsoon, and a low chance of rain and snow. In recent years, the monsoon rains have receded later with weather patterns typically stabilizing in mid-October. While the chance of snow is decreased, there is the possibility of a heavy snowfall at higher elevations. If ill-timed and prolonged, this can make it difficult to cross some passes.
