May 6 - May 12, 2024 | Change
With roads being extended further into the region there are now a few options for those who want to trek in rather than fly. Starting from Dhap allows you to take in the famed views of Pikey Peak on the trek in before joining the main trail at Junbesi. For the traditionalist, with bus service now extending to Bhandar the classic Jiri start can now be reduced by a day. Starting from Bhandar allows you to follow the route of early climbing expeditions into the Khumbu. While not that high by Himalayan standards, the trekking routes into the Khumbu are surprisingly strenuous. Since the path cuts across the valleys that descend from the high Himalayas, there is a lot of up and down climbing as you climb out of one valley and descend down to a river only to climb out the other side. This area sees far fewer trekkers than the trails above Lukla, but still has a pretty good lodge infrastructure.
Side trip via Pikey Peak: Sir Edmund Hillary is said to have declared Pikey Peak is favorite trekking view point in Nepal. On a clear day it is possible to see as far as Dhaulagiri to the west and Kanchenjunga to the East.
May is the end of the ‘Spring Season’ when temperatures are more moderate and the pre-monsoon moisture increases the chance of precipitation as the month progresses. It can be hot and humid in the valleys at low elevations, so make sure you carry enough water. Like the rest of the spring, clear mornings typically give way to cloudy afternoons. At high altitudes, the precipitation can turn to snow, although at trekking elevations the accumulation does not usually get too deep. May is also the season when many 8000 m peaks are climbed so base camps of these mountains will be busy with activity.
