Highlights: Samagaon, Punggen Gompa, and Manaslu Base Camp

Difficulty: strenuous
via Manaslu Base Camp

High above Samagaon, this day hike follows a ridge overlooking the clear blue lake of Birendra Tal with panoramic views across the valley. It’s a strenuous climb that offers rewarding views during the ascent to the basecamp of the world's 8th highest peak.

Side trip via Punggen Gompa: This tiny monastery at the foot of Manaslu makes up in location for what it lacks in size. The day trip from Samagaon to Punggen Gompa offers spectacular views of the mountain.

Weather Conditions in May

change start

May is the end of the ‘Spring Season’ when temperatures are more moderate and the pre-monsoon moisture increases the chance of precipitation as the month progresses. It can be hot and humid in the valleys at low elevations, so make sure you carry enough water. Like the rest of the spring, clear mornings typically give way to cloudy afternoons. At high altitudes, the precipitation can turn to snow, although at trekking elevations the accumulation does not usually get too deep. May is also the season when many 8000 m peaks are climbed so base camps of these mountains will be busy with activity.

At a glance
On average there are 12 days with precipitation in May. The highest point on the trek is Manaslu Base Camp at 4500 m. During May, expect high temperatures of around 10.4°C (51°F) and lows down to -2.6°C (27°F) at Manaslu Base Camp.

We loved this side trip! Great for acclimatisation and for a challenge. It is a long day so start early and take a packed lunch and snacks. Well worth the effort and the views on the way up.

The day we went to the Monastery (rather than Base Camp) was a day of celebration. We met the Monks who had come to pray and it was a very surreal experience surrounded by the snow covered high peaks whilst listening to the incantations. Beautiful spot.

If possible I would recommend a day trip to Manaslu base camp. It is not only a great way to acclimatize as it follows the climb high sleep low rule but is also amazing to see where a push for the summit of Manaslu all begins. Although the peaks are intimidating from the teahouse villages, seeing the peak from base camp really puts into perspective how massive the mountains truly are.
