Trip Board (no comments)
This is the most popular and iconic trek in the Khumbu. Follow the footsteps of Tenzing Norgay, Edmund Hillary, and those that followed to the base of the highest mountain in the world. En route, you’ll pass the centuries old Buddhist monastery of Tengboche and hike alongside the Khumbu glacier to Gorak Shep, the last permanent encampment before Everest Basecamp. In addition to Everest Basecamp, you will climb to the dizzying height of 5643 m (18,513 ft) and view one of the most magnificent panoramas in the Himalayas atop Kala Patthar. Those with a little more time and a sense of adventure can add side trips via the spectacular Kongma La pass, the Cho La pass, and the Renjo La Pass.
Side trip via Chukhung Ri Climb: The climb to the 5550 m (18,209 ft) summit of Chukhung Ri is a tough lung busting struggle, but the reward is a panoramic view of Makalu, Island Peak, Ama Dablam, and the glacial lake of Imja Tsho. This should only be attempted if you feel well acclimatized at Chukhung.
Side trip via Kongma La: Probably the least traversed of the classic three passes in the Khumbu region, the path to the Kongma La (5535 m) offers a spectacular but strenuous route between Chukhung and Lobuche. This pass offers unparalleled views of what many regard as one of the most beautiful mountains in Khumbu, the pointed spired of Ama Dablam. While in Chukhung, you may wish to spend an additional day and climb Chukhung Ri for a panorama of the Chukhung Valley, or hike to the alpine lake of Imja Tsho.
Side trip via Ama Dablam Base Camp: If you are itching to get off the trekking highway to Everest Base Camp, a day detour off to the much less visited Ama Dablam Base Camp may be just what you're looking for. This off the beaten path side trip take you right up to the base of one of the Khumbu regions most beautiful mountains. Along the way, you’ll get views of Everest as you pass by yak shelters and walls constructed by Sherpa herdsmen.
Early November, along with late October, are the most popular times to trek in Nepal. Temperatures get cooler in November, but the skies get clearer and the chance of rain or snow interrupting your trek gets lower. At high altitudes, trekkers are rewarded with good views throughout the day.
